The best conformal coating material to use depends on the worst-case operating temperature of the device. If the circuit board is expected to be exposed to extreme temperatures, a flexible conformal coating can help manage the temperature variation. However, if the board will only be subjected to normal temperatures, an epoxy-based conformal coating might be more appropriate.

A key factor in selecting a conformal coating manufacturer is lead time, which refers to the amount of time it takes to get the boards from the manufacturer to the assembly facility. The manufacturer must be able to deliver the boards when needed to meet production schedules and avoid delays that might impact product launch dates. It’s also a good idea to ask the manufacturer about its Design for Manufacturability (DFM) capabilities, as this will offer recommendations that can enhance the manufacturing process and reduce costs. Altium Designer, for instance, enables users to specify the conformal coating specifications as part of the electrical design process and share this information with the PCB manufacturer.
